After graduating from secondary school in Abbotsford, John attended courses at University of the Fraser Valley, Columbia Bible College and Simon Fraser University, where he completed a Bachelors degree in Business Administration.
John entered public practice in 1986 and enrolled in the CGA Association of British Columbia professional studies program. He received his CGA designation in 1988. During this time, John served as a volunteer for the Royal Life Saving Society, the Canadian Red Cross Society as well as his local church.
He has been an active member in the CGA organization, serving on the local chapter board as well as numerous provincial boards and committees. He has served as Chair of the Public Practice Advisory Group of CGA-BC, Chair of the Chapter Advisory Group of CGA-BC and Chair of the Practice Review Committee of CGA-BC. In 2005 John was elected to serve on the board of governors.
In 2010, John served as the President of the Certified General Accountants’ Association of BC and has served on some committees for CGA Canada. His depth of knowledge and passion for public practice has greatly benefited the association.
In 2011, John joined the board of the Abbotsford Restorative Justice and Advocacy Association and serves as the treasurer. In 2012 John was appointed to the Audit Certification Board for the Province of British Columbia by Premier Christy Clark. In August of 2013, he joined as a board member of the University of the Fraser Valley. Most recently, John was elected Vice-Chair for the Public Practice Committee on the CPA-BC board as of 2015.
Outside of the office and his numerous involvements, John enjoys spending time with his wife Crystal, their two children David and Carmen and his grandchildren Ethan, Rylee and Gavin. John also enjoys diving in tropical waters and driving his classic cars around town.
